Biography.
Nadia Turner was born and raised in the outback Queensland mining town, Mount Isa. At fourteen years of age Nadia commenced art classes with renowned local artist, Pat D’arcy who focussed mainly on the traditional skills of painting landscapes. For many years Nadia developed and explored outback landscapes, and this remained her preferred early subject matter.
In 1995 Nadia studied a degree in Visual Art at the Queensland University of Technology. It was during this time that her grounding in traditional techniques evolved into her current passion for abstract design and colour. After university Nadia moved to England and started her career as an artist.
In 1999 Nadia created her own business helping other artists market and sell their work. The business was assisted by The Princes Trust, and Nadia had the rare opportunity to show her art and achievements to HRH Prince Charles himself.
Nadia has completed further studies in teaching and art as a form of healing and therapy and ran regular workshops in Art Expression for the disabled and elderly suffering from dementia.
In 2002 Nadia returned to Australia and was a very active member in the arts community of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and established an artist-run gallery in Fairlight with two other artists where she regularly curated community exhibitions involving well established artists from around the nation. Her work was represented by a number of galleries in Sydney and collected by many.
Nadia expanded her art career in August 2011 and relocated to Asia where she focused on her passion for teaching and encouraging creativity in young people. Nadia is currently the Head of Art at a prestigious British School in Malaysia, she also paints from her studio in Malaysia, and exhibits regularly throughout Australia and Singapore.
Artist Statement.
I fell in love with painting when I was 13 years old. For this reason, I cannot separate my journey as a person from my journey as an artist.
Every element of this journey … ranging from my early technical training in Australian outback landscapes to the overwhelming freedom encouraged during my time in the university studios … has led me to this point.
Along the way I have experimented mostly with abstract designs and portraits. Intense, bold colour has become synonymous with my work, but I have also developed a fondness for strong, black lines to counterbalance each piece. I have learnt that uninhibited experimentation will eventually lead you to your destination … that place where technique and outcome can resonate with something inside you.
The only thing that has remained constant throughout the journey is that all my work has been a reflection of my inner self; my thoughts, feelings and emotions. For this one reason, I consider my works to be incredibly personal … like a poem, a song or a prayer.
My work draws inspiration from my love of travel, experiencing different cultures and nature. I have the most beautiful family and would not be where I am today if it was not for them.
